The Whiskey Songs Chronicle – A Week of Ups and Downs.

Good Tuesday to you,

This week has certainly been an intense week of ups and downs. Sunday night, the new single, “A Damn Good Ride” reached “bubbling under” (top 60) status on the Texas Music Charts. I was absolutely elated when I saw this. This was the second single that I have had reach the top 60 on the Texas Music Chart, and I will ALWAYS remember exactly the way I felt when the first single, “Auburn”, reached that point. I had been pushing the single, independently, for 3-4 months, and I was getting nervous about whether it would get on the chart. I had stayed up late the Sunday night before the new chart, checking in to see if the update would hit that night. It did not post that evening and I got to bed around 3 a.m.

It was cold, but sunny outside that next morning, and as I was just opening my eyes when I heard the cell phone vibrating with a text message. The message was from a dear friend of mine, Karen Erwin, and it simply said: “Congratulations. Look at the Chart.”. I popped out of bed and ran to the computer, overwhelmed. With the help of so many great friends, we had finally gotten the song to this very important point, #60 on the Texas Chart. I could hear the smile on her face when I called her to thank her. Sadly, that text message did not come this Monday morning. Karen passed on this Sunday after months of battling heart disease. She was an amazing friend to many of us in the music community, and her loss is very sad. Most of the things that I did “right” promoting the first two independent singles was due to her friendly guidance. I will miss her dearly and know that she is looking down on so many of the young musicians she has helped, and especially her two sons and new grandson, Ethan Douglas, with pride. I’m very grateful to have known her. I am also every bit as grateful for the tons of great friends and family still with us!

KAREN ERWIN

Karen Erwin of Comanche died Sunday afternoon at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 28, 1950, in Stanton, Texas. Karen is survived by her husband, C. Douglas; two sons and their wives, Zackary & Jennifer Erwin of Granbury and Clayton & Marcy Erwin of Lubbock; and one grandson, Ethan, also of Granbury.

Karen attended Howard County Junior College and graduated from nursing school, obtaining her LVN. She worked for Dr. Paul Livingston, Comanche County Hospital and Stevens Home Health Care.

Karen’s love of the community led her to be actively involved in the Comanche Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture as well as other civic organizations. She served as Chamber President for 1997-98 & 2008-09. She was a Chamber Director from 1996-98 & 2007-08 and was honored as 1998 Woman of the Year. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority, having served as president and many other offices. Karen worked with Comanche County 4-H, leading many projects and working with many young people. Karen worked tirelessly on the Hospital Board and was instrumental in many Comanche County Medical Center Hospital Foundation endeavors. She served as Foundation secretary. Karen was an avid golfer, enjoying friends and competition. She served as an LGA officer at P-A-R Country Club.

Karen loved Texas music and enjoyed listening to it as well and helping young musicians with their journey.

Services for Karen Erwin of Comanche will be Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at Comanche Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerald Burns will officiate. Burial will follow at Pendergrass Cemetery, Sydney, Texas.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 27, 2009, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Comanche Funeral Home.
